Opinion: Not all kids will learn to read the exact same way [Opinion]
” : Your recent commentary on the whole language approach versus the phonics approach to reading instruction is overly simplistic, given the complexity of learning to read. As an English teacher with a master’s in reading instruction, I feel both systems have merits when combined. Too many students can decode a reading passage beautifully, but have no understanding of its meaning.
Additionally, there will always be a percentage who simply cannot hear the nuances of the letter sounds. Those children must learn through memorization of words via sight word lists. In my view, phonics and sight word instruction should dominate in the primary years, combined with the strategies of the whole language approach that focus on meaning-making.
There are merits to both systems when used in tandem. Good instruction uses all the tools in the toolbox to meet the diverse needs of all students, not planting political flags.
