Gregor Chisholm: Nate Pearson isn’t the prospect he once was. The Blue Jays believe the star potential is still there
The Jays would push back against that assessment because nobody is writing off the 26-year-old right-hander quite yet. Teams just don’t turn their backs on an arm that can throw 100 mph, especially when that velocity is backed by a wipe-out slider.
That’s a far cry from a few years ago when Pearson was supposed to step right in and become one of the Jays’ front-line starters. The expectations were similar each of the last two seasons, but this spring the Jays would be content if he“It’s just the way things have been going,” Pearson said when asked to reflect upon his transition from starter to reliever. “Obviously I’ve been a starter for my whole career and the last couple of years there were just a bunch of injuries.
Luck hasn’t been on Pearson’s side for a long time now. So, before the Jays decide to start relying on him again, the former first-round pick will need to prove he can actually stay healthy. That means Pearson, for now, is coming back as a reliever, one that is expected to open the year at Triple-A Buffalo.
