Nate Erskine-Smith: Rebuilding Ontario’s Liberals for the next generation via torontostar

We need a leader with authenticity and who encourages the same of their team. That means parting with the top-down way of doing politics that can shut out new ideas. And it means a commitment to fair and open nominations and freer votes to empower those strong local voices.

Of course, sharp contrasts are still required in elections. The Conservative government lacks the competence, compassion and integrity that we deserve in our politics and we shouldn’t be shy about pointing that out. For all of its faults, politics is the most important way to make a difference in the lives of those around us. But we can’t expect people, especially young people, to see it that way if we don’t treat it that way.We need to engage with communities in every corner of our province. Whether or not a community has a Liberal MPP at Queen’s Park, every community should have a strong voice in our party.

We are also working to attract new people to politics, to build this together for the next 15 years. For my part, I joined a federal nomination race in my own community at the age of 29 because of the call then for generational renewal.
