Opinion: My classmate donated her left kidney to save my life during our doctoral program [Opinion]

graduated from the University of San Diego with a Doctor in Nursing Practice degree. He lives in Brawley.

Prior to this health scare, I had graduated with my master’s Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner degree in May 2019, and I was on the road to earning my new degree at the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. I was working as a family nurse practitioner in the Imperial Valley, serving the community where I grew up.

I did not see this coming. There were no signs or symptoms, and I was shocked, devastated and afraid when I got my diagnosis just before starting my Doctor of Nursing Practice program in October 2020. I often questioned whether I should proceed or withdraw from the program because I didn’t know the road I was up against. I relied on my strong faith in God to show me the way and decided to proceed. I was not going to allow my health to interfere with my dreams.

Then, in early 2022, I learned that I had, not one, but two kidney matches! My niece Monica Pozos and my good friend and classmate Amanda Cuellar were both a match. As happy and overjoyed as I was to hear this news, I was afraid. I worried for their health over mine. But they were both eager and willing to help save my life.
