Opinion: My brother's prison experience exposed me to the faults of our justice system [Opinion]

During our visit, Josh spoke at length about those he was incarcerated with. He shared stories about those who had befriended him from his first night in the unit, the kindness and humanity of the other incarcerated people, and his shock at the length of sentences for nonviolent offenses. One man, a chemist with a Ph.D. in his 50s, was serving a 25-year sentence after being convicted of selling chemicals and equipment to manufacturers.
Leaving the prison that day, I experienced feelings I’ve since heard expressed by every family member of an incarcerated loved one — the desire to give them hope, to protect them from the bad things happening outside and to get them home. Mostly a joy for a loved one’s freedom yet sadness for the lost time and lives that continued while they were away.
