Opinion: Memories of this impeachment charade will fade quickly
With the end in sight to what can only be called “the impeachment pageant,” we can now expect a flood of “What did we learn?” essays.
There are no “lessons” here other than the abuse of power by members of a partisan majority in the House to raise profiles and profits for themselves. This chapter leaves a constitutional scar. This behavior is not what impeachment was intended for. President Trump’s phone call did not include any offense, much less any impeachable one.And fake history, it should be noted, is about to have a big weekend.to promote Alexa.
I raise this possibility as a reminder that our collective memory about an event often turns out very differently than the event itself. Trump is going to be acquitted, but what will the Super Bowl ads of 2070 say? Perhaps the writers of Sunday’s Alexa ad genuinely thought Nixon ordered his tapes deleted, or perhaps they didn’t care and wanted a laugh. The effect, though, will be to promote “fake history.” And “fake history” distorts collective memory.
