Dave Feschuk: Maple Leafs are hobbling on a thin blue line, with Muzzin to miss most of the season and Brodie out a couple of weeks
The job for the remaining members of Toronto’s depleted defensive corps is as clear as it is difficult.
Ideally, Muzzin will be healthy enough to perform come playoff time; his unique combination of big-bodied grit and Stanley Cup-winning experience isn’t easily replaced.
While acknowledging that a trade may be in the cards, Dubas said he’d first like to evaluate how the club’s existing defencemen respond to the situation. “When you lose a guy like him, off the ice there’s a void there just as much as there is on the ice sometimes,” Rielly said. “It’s on guys to speak up a little more, accept more of a leadership role, whatever that might be. We’re going to need guys to take that on, on and off the ice. On the plane, he’s our guy in poker. So we need someone to come and step in.”
