Opinion: Manny Pacquiao backed my first-ever film about anti-Asian hate during the pandemic [Opinion]
My father served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, and my mother was a nurse at Veterans Home of California of Chula Vista. They are both proud American citizens, but when I saw the rise in hate crimes, I began to worry about their safety.
With no experience in creating a full feature film, I figured I could at least write a screenplay since I felt it was shorter than a novel. I researched top boxing films like “Rocky” and learned that Sylvester Stallone wrote it in. This is what gave me hope to write “Almighty Zeus,” which took me less than a week to complete.
I purposely made the protagonist, Zeus, an Asian American, and the mentor a Black American so that they could learn the differences in their cultures. During production, we put protocols in place to avoid the spread of COVID-19. If one of our team members were to get COVID-19, that would be the end of the movie. Since I wrote, directed and acted in the movie, it was important that I was always healthy. At the end of 21 days, no one had caught COVID-19, and we were able to finish the movie on time.
