Opinion: Over the past 12 years, the Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue has evolved into a charitable organization with a dedicated audience and communities and a clear place in this city.

To me, Black Artists’ Networks in Dialogue is many things, but first and foremost it has always been about space: taking it up, making it, finding it, and revitalizing it.

Ten years later, I was working for the City of Toronto as a museum administrator and the idea for BAND emerged during brunch with my fellow co-founders. We discussed the state of Black culture in Toronto and agreed there was a gap in the visual arts space; one that had not been properly filled since the closing of CAN:BAIA. We needed a place to show Black artists’ work and we recognized an opportunity to create conversations across networks for various artistic disciplines.
