BOSTON—Teoscar Hernández has been chasing the game all season. Looks like he might have finally caught it.
Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts was talking about that just the other day, how he hasn’t been able to find his swing all season. Like, where does it go? But here is the most intriguing statistic that has emerged since then: Last season, Hernández swung on the first pitch he saw in an at-bat a whopping 40.2 per cent of the time, in the 88th percentile among all player in first-pitch swing rate. To this point in 2022, largely attributable to the adjustment he made in early June, Hernández has been first-pitch swinging just 23.8 per cent of the time.
“Seeing the first pitch just gives me a better idea of what I’m looking for,” Hernández said. “I still want to be aggressive but I also want to see what the pitchers are going to offer. I don’t want to be out there and swing at a pitch way out of the strike zone, now I’m 0-1.”“If I’m swinging like that, it means I don’t really have a plan for that day. And I don’t know the planbetween pitcher and batter. “I know more about the strike zone now,” Hernández continued earnestly.
That he had no hits to show on four occasions from Aug. 12 to Aug. 20 pretty much aligned with Toronto’s losing funk in that cold mid-month swoon, before the hex was broken in the Bronx, en route to Beantown. Hernández is still an all-field power hitter, thus he hasn’t been too frustrated by the shift when opposing teams apply it to him.
