Susan Delacourt: Justin Trudeau is looking past the ‘Freedom Convoy’ — but Ottawa is holding its breath
Ottawa doesn’t need to brace this weekend for a replay of the convoy protest, says the new police chief, because “lots has changed since last year.”
Rouleau’s report is expected to focus on how to avoid the mess and anarchy of another convoy or convoy-like protest in the future. But that report isn’t due for another month, and this weekend, in fact, will be an early test of what everyone learned through those public hearings — not just the police, but politicians and Canadians overall.
That in itself is a bit of a change, since the Rouleau hearings exposed just how much the protest grew out of a basic failure of intelligence — whether that was inability or sheer unwillingness of authorities to believe that the convoy was a different breed of protest altogether. “A handful of angry people do not define what Hamilton is or what democracy in this country is,” Trudeau told reporters in Hamilton on Wednesday.
Officially, the Rouleau commission was only supposed to answer the question of whether Trudeau was right to invoke emergency legislation to end the protest. But of course, those hearings turned into much more, and many people hope all that testimony has become a vaccine of sorts against a future protest.
