Edward Keenan: John Tory broke city council by asking for Big Boss powers. Now the buck stops with him

What’s known in the U.S. as the “Pottery Barn rule” has long applied to the contents of China shops, and was famously applied by former“You broke it, you bought it.”. Maybe permanently. It happened with the eager acquiescence of Premier Doug Ford for sure, but unmistakably at Tory’s request and according to the mayor’s design. City council now is a mostly symbolic advisory appendage to the superpowered mayor’s office. Tory did that. Now he gets to own it.

It’s kind of an unfamiliar look for Tory, to be honest. For eight years as mayor — and for a long career before that as a candidate for various offices and public figure in various roles — his whole thing has been that he’s “the man in the middle,” the reasonable consensus seeker reaching across the aisle. Charitably, the mayor of moderation; less charitably, the master of mediocrity.

Peter Parker’s uncle gave him a motto that might inform you well if your superpowers come, as Spider-Man’s did, with a secret identity. But for a public figure, great power comes not just with the great responsibility Uncle Ben talked about, but also with great accountability. If you seek and receive massive authority, the rest of us get to ask you why you used it the way you did, and indeed why you didn’t use it if you could have and should have.
