Gregor Chisholm: It’s easy to be a fan of MLB’s rule changes
Rob Manfred has taken a lot of heat over the years — and rightfully so — but he deserves credit for overseeing the most transformative rule changeshas seen in decades. The commissioner’s grand plan to create a new brand of baseball is going off without a hitch.
“We are extremely pleased with the early returns,” Manfred told The Associated Press earlier this week. “Fan reaction has been positive to the brisker pace with more action, and players have made a great adjustment to the changes.” Bigger bases, which cut the distance between bags by 4 1/2 inches, combined with limiting the number of pick-off attemptsThrough the first six days, stolen bases were up to 1.28 per game. That might not seem like a large increase over last year’s 1.02, but it’s the biggest jump the league has seen from one year to the next since the start of the 1900s.
