Opinion: The Metaverse will push borders, time zones, and even language barriers further into irrelevance. People are right to fear a corporate Metaverse. But we can't allow Silicon Valley to hijack the internet’s next revolution.
That’s why I believe that in a world riddled with inequality, the Metaverse couldn’t have come at a better time.
Do not let the latest big tech maneuverings scare you. The Metaverse is far bigger than a handful of companies; it belongs to the global community of creators, builders, and coders whose hard work is giving birth to the next era of the internet. In today’s workplace, identity often trumps the quality of your work. In the U.S., a woman can expect to earn 79 per cent of the average male salary, and Black men can expect to earn 87 per cent of the average white man’s salary. When the world lives behind avatars, identity is chosen and not assigned. The metaverse presents a very real opportunity to rebuild the world of work, while leaving systemic prejudice at the door.
This may appear foreign to us, yet Gen-Zers are already Metaverse natives, and it shows. Young gamers from across the Global South are making more money than their parents by participating in the “play-to-earn” video game model. Teenagers are making millions by selling NFT art. The Metaverse is already closing the generational wealth gap, and that’s only the beginning.
The recent Hong Kong protests, to take just one example, were fuelled by social media. Indeed, the Ukranian protests were facilitated by a web of anonymous discord channels that were able to broadcast the regime’s crackdowns to the outside world.
