Pierre Poilievre, the suspected front\u002Drunner, isn’t holding back from going negative, and has put rivals Jean Charest and Patrick Brown on the defensive

Pierre Poilievre, the suspected front-runner, isn’t holding back from going negative, and has put rivals Jean Charest and Patrick Brown on the defensive. Typically, attack ads and press releases accusing candidates of lying would be reserved for general elections. But this is the Conservatives’ third go at selecting a new leader since the party lost power in 2015, and it’s clear that new strategies are being tested this time around.

You’d think that launching highly personalized attacks against other viable candidates would limit Poilievre’s ability to attract down-ballot support. Yet, the conventional strategy assumes that every member will assign a ranking to each candidate. Yet recent changes to the Conservative leadership process could mitigate this risk for Poilievre. Previous contests assigned 100 points to each riding. Rather than needing a simple majority of votes, candidates needed a simple majority of points to win the leadership. The first candidate to win more than 16,901 points became the party leader.
