Opinion from reggcohn: First time lucky. Second time re-elected. Whatever you think about DougFord, this lopsided OntarioElection victory is his alone. Love him or loathe him, Ford owns it.

To defeat your enemy you first have to understand your enemy. In reality, New Democrats were facing an improved opponent who learned on the job — a premier scarred byDespite raising and spending more money than ever before on attack ads, the NDP campaign machine was beaten by a disciplined PC team that tapped into the public’s fears and aspirations.

How did the premier who seemed destined to remain a one-term blip — or wrecking ball — recover so remarkably? In politics, the saying goes, governments aren’t defeated — they defeat themselves. Once Ford stopped doing himself in, and dragging down the province, the boos subsided and he rebounded. When asked who would make the best premier, 36 per cent of voters chose Ford — more than double the 17 per cent who named Horwath and the 14 per cent opting for Del Duca, according to an Abacus Data survey released this week.

His rivals played catch-up, embracing the same vocabulary with similar sloganeering — an NDP tax freeze on income up to $200,000 a year; a Liberal free ride on the gas tax, plus “buck-a-ride” on transit fares ; both parties also went along with Ford’s shameless vote-buying gambit of rebating licence plate fees for every car in Ontario.
