Opinion Martin Regg Cohn: Here’s why Toronto’s bloated race for mayor is bad for democracy

Torontonians are waking up to an election campaign overrun by more than 100 candidates running for mayor after Friday’s final deadline for nominations.risks turning a serious race into a bad joke at the ballot box.

Now, more than 100 adult attention-seekers are acting like kids in a candy store, clamouring for your attention ― and decision ― in the voting booth. To be clear, there have always been crank candidates and fringe campaigns. But I cannot recall any ballot list as limitless and unwieldy as this one — we don’t have 102 aspiring and perspiring rivals for the job of premier or prime minister or councillor, let alone dogcatcher.

For accessibility cuts both ways. If we allow anyone to put their name forward without minimal bona fides, we make it harder for everyone who votes to make sense of the morass. The answer is that someone, at some time, wanted to discourage nuisance candidates. But if we require a fee and signatures, we might as well make them substantial instead of symbolic.
