Parents start dreaming of NHL fame or NCAA Division I scholarships or professional careers when their kids are 12, or younger. That didn’t happen in the 1970s on this scale. Parents now talk openly about the athleticEntire Canadian industries are based on specialized training for children. A lot of people are making a lot of money out of this, with parents devoting resources to sports over academics.

The exhilaration of winning, or seeing a Canadian athlete succeed against the world’s best, is so intoxicating that few want to ruin the party by suggesting there’s a cost.the recommendations that followed Johnson’s disgrace more than 30 years ago have largely been forgotten, amid calls for a national investigation into the current crisis of abuse in Canadian sports.

How do we align that with watching Taylor sink a 72-foot putt to make history while renowned American commentator Jim Nantz shouts “glorious and free”? Can we have both? Can there be a golden era in sports in which we also protect our children from abuse at the hands of overly ambitious coaches and parents?

Really, we have to try. But it seems the victories, and the pride that comes with them, capture our attention so much more.
