.SusanDelacourt: Doug Ford becomes an unlikely role model for Conservative leadership hopefuls via torontostar
It may not be fair to compare them, but the first Ontario leaders’ debate on Tuesday was far superior to last week’s debut debate between the federal Conservative leadership candidates.
The next leadership debate — the first official one among all six contenders for the Conservative crown — is a chance to do better. That ought to be the first thing on the minds of every would-be leader when they take the stage in Edmonton on Wednesday night. “I worry about the internal competition getting too personal,” Reform Party founder Preston Manning told reporters last weekend. “I’d like to see them stick to the principles and policies.”Kenney told The National Post
If it was just a personality clash, that division might be shrugged off as the intensity of competition, a demonstration of the personal stakes in this race. That split among the contenders — radical versus nonradical change — cannot help but be on display in Edmonton on Wednesday night. Because, as it’s now common — even cliche — to say, this is a contest for the brand and identity of conservatism itself in this country.
