Susan Delacourt: Do the results of the U.S. midterms mean something good for Justin Trudeau?

Canada may soon see one tangible result of this week’s midterm elections in the United States — a visit to this country by President Joe Biden.

While Canada-U.S. relations are measured by much more than symbolic leaders’ meetings, Biden’s no-show has fed into the narrative that Canada has had to work almost as hard at its friendship with Democrats as it did with the disruptive Republican Donald Trump. Trudeau’s official line on the midterms was that Canada would work with whatever the U.S. electorate hands us. “Canadians can know that we will continue to work constructively and productively with the U.S. government, with the administration, regardless of what happens from one election to the next,” the prime minister said on Wednesday.

Jamie Raskin, re-elected as a Maryland Democratic congressman on Tuesday night, put it this way to The New York Times: “I think that pundits sometimes project onto the public a crude materialism, where all people care about is pocketbook issues in the narrowest sense,” Raskin said. “People understand how precarious and precious a thing constitutional democracy is, and they don’t want to lose it.”
