.ChantalHbert: Did Jagmeet Singh make a fool’s bargain with Justin Trudeau? He may be about to find out
MONTREAL—With the ink barely dry on the pact struck last month between Jagmeet Singh’s NDP and Justin Trudeau’s minority government, its resilience is about to be tested not once but twice.
Singh has proactively neutralized the poison pill that an expected increase in defence spending could have been. Last week, the NDP leader said he would be looking to ensure that any new defence spending did not come at the expense of the funding of social programs. More than a few Liberals are worried that Trudeau’s gains on the front of predictability and stability in the House of Commons will result in long term pain for the party’s reputation as a responsible fiscal manager.
The second test of the resilience of the agreement could revolve around the proposed development of a massive oilfield off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. At the same time, the federal government has just issued a blueprint designed to achieve its 2050 target to decarbonize the Canadian economy. The approval of a new fossil fuel project could set off a barrage of questions as to whether Trudeau’s climate change blueprint is backed by actual political will.
For if the cabinet turns down Bay du Nord and its below average carbon footprint, the signal the decision will send will be that no project will find grace in the eye of the current Liberal government.
