Opinion | Denver has the resources to “cure” homelessness if money is spent on proven solutions instead of sweeps
Jamming blankets, clothes, and toiletries into a green canvas duffle bag, the 28-year-old man had no idea where his twelfth move in four months would land him.
At 4 a.m. on sweep day, the clatter of the temporary stainless-steel fencing being erected at both ends of the block rousted Sean and a few other people. Others were awakened by Denver Police officers outside their tents telling them they needed to move on in just four hours. According to Staughton, the fact that people forced to move after an encampment sweep rarely have viable housing options adds insult to injury.“We’re both drug addicts,” he said, “and are trying our best to cope with our addiction and mental health issues.”
Mark, who also asked that his last name not be used, said he doesn’t understand why people living in encampments do not opt to stay in shelters instead. “I realize shelters aren’t the best,” he said, “but any roof over your head has got to be better than living in a tent on a city sidewalk.” Beyond the restrictive rules and safety concerns, Virya said, “The city simply doesn’t have enough shelter beds for everyone who needs one.”Volunteer Jesse Lyon with UC Health takes down information at the Denver Rescue Mission for the annual Point in Time survey on Monday evening, Jan. 29, 2018 in Denver.
The problem, experts suggest, lies in where and how the money for people experiencing homelessness is being spent.
