Thomson: Danielle Smith is buying Albertans’ votes, but can she gain their trust? via torontostar
EDMONTON—Premier Danielle Smith insists she is not trying to buy votes ahead of the upcoming Alberta election.really should be called “Securing the United Conservative Party’s Future.”The government is tossing billions of dollars about like Johnny Appleseed, hoping they take root in voters’ minds as they cast their vote on May 29.This year’s new budget surplus is $2.4 billion. That might look like a paltry sum compared to the $10.
But it’s also very much a budget that is using money to influence the election, starting with health care. It’s top issue with a majority of Albertans who think the UCP government dropped the ball during the pandemic under Premier Jason Kenney.
Some of that money has already been announced. Then again, the government spent the last few weeks pre-announcing huge chunks of new budget spending.
