Canada won’t let us help children in Afghanistan. The people of Afghanistan need our support more than ever. But right now Canadian humanitarian organizations are prevented from providing humanitarian aid. Opinion by DGlenwright
Canadian allies, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, the EU and Australia, have updated their sanctions regimes to allow for humanitarian “carve outs” so aid organizations can continue their work in Afghanistan. But Canada has not.
For decades, Canadian humanitarian and development agencies have operated in Afghanistan to the highest levels of vigilance and compliance. To be prevented from doing that now is heartbreaking. Since 2001, Canada has provided a total of $3.6 billion in international assistance to Afghanistan, focused on education, health, human rights and the rights of women and girls. So how can it turn its back now on the dire situation facing Afghanis?
The Canadian government needs to act now — to allow Canadian organizations to support local partners in delivering lifesaving humanitarian aid and protecting children’s rights. Canadian organizations are at risk of prosecution if they work in Afghanistan with Canadian funds. This is not the way the law was intended to be used. We implore the Canadian government to remove barriers preventing us and others from helping the people of Afghanistan immediately. It would be a moral failure to let another year pass without resolving this crucial issue.
