Canada can re-envision itself as a great arsenal of energy for democracy
When the Canadian government banned imports of Russian crude oil in early March, many noted that this alone would be a toothless measure. Canada had not imported any Russian crude since 2019, and even that year’s Russian barrelsNonetheless, Canada has been importing many other goods from Russia,$2.1-billion in 2021, with refined petroleum products, fertilizers and metals among the largest categories.
Our key aims, then, should be to develop and deploy technologies to decarbonize our own energy consumption; rapidly decarbonize our petroleum production; and quickly increase export capacity for oil and liquefied natural gas to supply the world. Second, expediting carbon sequestration is the linchpin for decarbonizing Canadian petroleum production. Networks for carbon capture, use and storage are the most rapid way to decarbonize gas-fired power generation and many large industrial emitters. For instance, Canada$346-million of Russian-produced urea last year – a product that is spread by farmers to replenish nitrogen in soils but emits carbon after being spread.
