Dave Poulin: Börje Salming and Darryl Sittler: Once a hero, always a hero
at Scotiabank Arena has been burned into my memory. It’s crystal clear. One teammate helping another say goodbye. It struck a chord.
As a kid and wistful admirer of everything NHL, Salming and Sittler seemed larger than life. It often starts with an individual effort, such asor a compelling playoff series, like the Leafs over the mighty Islanders in ’77. That one elevated my heroes to a new level with a Game 7 road win over the looming dynasty in New York.
Five years later, after a college degree and a year refining my skills in Europe, the transition from hero to peer was complete. I was called up to play my first NHL game for the Flyers in Toronto and Sittler assisted on my first goal, cementing a friendship I still treasure. Back in Philadelphia this past week for an ’80s night promotion, we had the chance to meet many fans who had grown up with our team. They spoke about where they were for memorable moments in surprising detail. I marvelled at the fact that we had played such a significant role in so many lives, and decided to poll some of my contemporaries on hand that night about their boyhood idols.
