Mike Wilner: Blue Jays’ offence wakes up to sweep the Mets, except it hadn’t been sleeping
The 35-year-old took former Jay Dominic Leone extremely deep, blasting his third home run of the season off the batters’ eye in dead centre. A two-run shot that followed a Guerrero single put the Jays back on top to stay. The 6-4 win was the Jays’ seventh in nine games since falling perilously close to the .500 mark. They improved to 33-27.
But memory is a strange thing, and while facts don’t triumph over feelings the way they used to — you know, back in the days when people were open to having their minds changed when presented with accurate information that contradicted what they thought was happening — a look at this Jays season shows pretty plainly that the bats are doing just about the same things they were doing last year.
The same results as last year are a net negative, since offence is up across the majors, attributable in part to the death of the infield shift. Those numbers had the Jays leading the league in batting average at this point last season, and second in on-base percentage, slugging and OPS. Right now they’re third in average, fourth in on-base percentage, sixth in slugging and fifth in OPS.
