Gregor Chisholm: Blue Jays have failed at developing bullpen depth and are paying the price for it
finally breaks out. When it doesn’t happen, not enough people are left to pick up the slack.
The question is whether that move will be enough. The bullpen might not be the weakness it was a year or two ago, but it’s certainly not a strength, at least not in comparison to most contenders. “The strikeouts are big. That’s been talked about a lot, obviously for some good reason, that’s an opportunity for us to improve. We’re never done, but the more depth you have sometimes does create opportunity cost, or lack of flexibility, that will have to be factored in.”
With rising costs and a big hole still to fill in the starting rotation, this was never going to be a problem the Jays intended to throw a lot of money at. Like almost every year before, they’re hoping to solve their problems on the cheap.
