Dave Feschuk: Atiba Hutchinson retires as the gold standard for Canadian men’s soccer. And this doesn’t have to be the end
And to an outsider’s eye, there was little to suggest that positive change was imminent.
As Hutchinson prepared to wrap up a peerless Canadian career with his 105th and final appearance for his country in Sunday night’sagainst the United States in Las Vegas, having announced his retirement from the sport at age 40 in the lead-up to the occasion, it was a worthy moment to acknowledge the midfielder’s instrumental role in transforming Canada from international no-hoper to intriguing up-and-comer.
Hutchinson’s career has been about building oneself into a success against considerable odds in relative obscurity — at least from a Canadian perspective.
