Mike Wilner: At the quarter mark, the Jays might be MLB’s best at beating the best
on Sunday. A sweep of the National League East leaders improved their record to 25-15, with the New York Yankees coming to town for four games starting Monday.
First it was the Tampa Bay Rays, who showed up in mid-April at 13-0, tying a modern-day record. The Jays beat them twice before dropping the series finale. But never mind the how. A win is a win is a win, and the Jays have won 12 of their last 19 and swept three of their last six series . They’re on a 101-win pace.
The results against the Rays and Braves — and, yes, the Pirates, who were 20-12 before the Jays stole their lunch money — certainly point to that being true. The Jays seem very matter of fact about their success when facing division leaders, which I guess is the way you want it. It would be weird if they were surprised by how well they’ve done, given what they expect to accomplish this year.
