Opinion: Alberta misses chance to make post-secondary education more affordable

While other provinces recognize the benefit of provincial OER programs, it is not clear why a province flush with cash cannot develop a similar approach. The textbook industry is controlled by a small group of companies that are not based in Canada. When students spend thousands a semester, a bit of that may stay with campus bookstores, but it is largely money from Albertans going to pad the bottom line of foreign publishers.

The value of OER should not be lost on the Government of Alberta. As part of the pre-budget consultation, a group of students, student associations, librarians, educational developers, faculty members and others put in a submission for a $4.57-million dollar OER initiative that could have brought Alberta in line with other provinces.
