Opinion: City Hall candidate Siri Agrell, a former journalist and John Tory staff member, was right to criticize words used to describe her candidacy. It's a good lesson in why precise words are required when covering elections, writes donovanvincent.

Toronto’s municipal election is Oct. 24. When campaigns and media coverage kick into high gear after Labour Day it won’t always be tranquil waters that reporters will be wading into.

Her objection provides a teachable moment about the potential pitfalls for journalists covering election campaigns. Similarly, back in May, after Agrell announced her intention to run, Shawn Micallef, who writes a weekly urban affairs column for the Star, posted on his own Twitter feed: “as some speculated, the mayor’s office is running candidates in key wards they think they can win. More vassal wards created like in 2018.” He references Agrell in the next sentence.

Agrell, who also served as deputy director of communications for former Liberal provincial premier Kathleen Wynne, says in no way did she simply do Tory’s bidding while working for him. In fact, she argues that she pushed him on policy issues as one of the lone progressive voices in his office.
