” : All this rhetoric regarding student loan debt borders on the ridiculous. It is a loan, people; you have to pay it back. Pure and simple. A college education is a privilege, not a right. It is no different from you being able to afford a Toyota Corolla when you want a Lamborghini. You must make better decisions on your choice of university. But your college costs are not anybody else’s responsibility.

I left Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos after a couple of years with great disappointment. I loved the university, the town and the friends I met who I still stay in touch with. But in the mid ‘70s, employment options in San Marcos were very slim. There was only one decision that I truly could make. That was to leave SWTSU and return to the Houston area. I went to work on the ship channel as a lab technician for a company that had the one thing I needed to pursue my college degree.

For the next four and a half years, I enrolled in two courses each semester that were offered at night. I never felt that completing my degree could be my first priority. My education fell behind a full-time job, a wife and a baby. I finally finished my degree and it has been a blessing, financially and emotionally, for me. I walked across that stage to receive my diploma — not for me, really, but for the pride I saw in my parents’ faces that day.

No one is entitled to a college degree. No one should bear the cost of your decisions, except you. Get over it. Pay the loan and get on with your life. And that feeling of success will never leave your heart.
