EDWARDSVILLE, N.S. — For years, the last of the dirty sewage flowing into the south arm of Sydney harbour came from the Edwardsville, Westmount and Coxheath areas.
Between treatment technology inside the plant and an outdoor reservoir harnessing the abilities of microorganisms to treat sewage, Hawkins — who’s worked in the municipal wastewater system for 15 years — said the facility includes some of the best technology available to treat wastewater. Jody Hawkins, an operator with CBRM wastewater: “As far as these plants compared to, say, Battery Point in Sydney, these are gems.
Not only does McDougall-Merrill envision a safer harbour, but said it’s another step toward the area’s natural beautification. She referenced the historical use of the Sydney harbour’s south end as places to swim and socialize before dumping became too much. Cape Breton Regional Municipality wastewater operations supervisor Brandon Talbot:"There’s a lot of moving parts and a lot going on day-to-day. It’s a busy job. It’s never a boring day.” LUKE DYMENT/CAPE BRETON POST - LUKE DYMENT/CAPE BRETON POSTWith its opening, the Edwardsville-based wastewater plant is the 10th operational plant in CBRM’s wastewater network.
The feds say treatment operations also must begin by 2040 in five locations dumping raw sewage into the ocean: the Northside, New Waterford, New Victoria, Donkin and Louisbourg. “We’ve got a head-start there financially,” said Brandon Talbot. Start dates for upgrades in those areas haven’t been determined yet.
