The site had been derelict for a decade
A new Lidl supermarket will be opening soon, replacing another store near the Nottinghamshire / Derbyshire border, after a long-running saga. The store in Chilwell, at West Point Shopping Centre, will shut on Wednesday, June 5. The shop is currently on the market for £1.5m.
In its place will be a newly-built supermarket in Nottingham Road, Long Eaton, due to open on Thursday June 6. It is said to be bigger and brighter with improvements for shoppers including larger car parking spaces, electric vehicle charging points, customer toilets and self-service checkouts. A new Wickes DIY store has already opened on the site, known as Stadium Retail Park.
Lidl first released multi-million pound plans in 2018 for a new store on what was disused land. However, the application was recommended for refusal by Erewash planners, who claimed the stores had the capability of being a “category killer” in terms of town centre trades, such as DIY supplies, bakers, butchers and greengrocers.
Councillors went on to reject the proposals in 2019, saying they wanted homes to be built on the site instead. The idea was to re-house the 173 households who were to be made homeless by the demolitions proposed by HS2 through Long Eaton - plans later scrapped. Previous proposals for the site, which had been derelict since 2014, involved 54 houses.
The two retailers appealed to the Government planning inspectorate and won in 2021. They returned with plans for bigger stores, which after tweaking, allowed construction work to begin.
