Open burning will be prohibited in the Coastal Fire Centre starting at noon Friday, the B.C. Wildfire Service announced
The restrictions are being put in place to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect the public. The ban is on open burn piles of two metres in height or three metres in width, grass burning and other pyrotechnics like fireworks and sky lanterns.
Campfires remain OK, but they must not exceed a half-metre in height or width, and you must create a fire guard by removing debris from around the fire. You must also have a hand tool for burying the embers or a minimum of eight litres of water to douse the flames. Cooking stoves using gas, propane or briquettes are also allowed.
The prohibition applies to all private and public land, and may also include local government restrictions beyond that.includes Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, the Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, the Central Coast and all of the Lower Mainland to Manning Park in the east. The prohibition will be in place until Oct. 28 unless rescinded earlier. Fines of up to $1,150 may be issued for contravening the fire ban, with penalties up to $100,000 and a year in jail if it goes to court. A person can be held responsible for all firefighting and associated costs if it causes or contributes to a wildfire.
