On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, thousands joined Opal Lee to celebrate Juneteenth with Opal's Walk for Freedom in Dallas and other cities across the country. The local 2.5-mile walk started and ended at the African American Museum, Dallas in Fair Park. At the end of the walk, Lee had a message for the young people in attendance, "Make yourself a committee of One.
The Fourth of July freed the land. Juneteenth freed the people. And I want you to remember that, and I want you young people to make yourselves a committee of one to change somebody’s mind.Opal Lee known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," made history when she was present as President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law making June 19th of every year a national holiday.
