Some blame gerrymandering for democracy’s demise, and gerrymandering has indeed played a prominent role. After all, the power of gerrymandering resides in the knowledge that most voters will automatically and obsequiously cast ballots solely based on party affiliation, with little or no knowledge about the people they are electing.
But gerrymandering is only part of the problem. The primary qualifications for political office in today’s America are increasingly becoming mendacity, hypocrisy, venality, megalomania, kleptocracy and even treason, which dissuades people with integrity from running for office and thus limits the choices voters are given.
