Mackenize Jordan, an Ontario woman, believed she had made a good purchase when she bought a van for $2,700 through Facebook Marketplace. However, she later discovered that the odometer had been rolled back nearly 100,000 kilometers, indicating that the vehicle had been tampered with.

"I was sitting there in the car and I looked up and I saw the Mr. Lube sticker and it said 288,000 kilometres and the next service was supposed to be October 24th," said Jordan. "We do have a compensation fund, but that fund is only available to consumers who purchase a vehicle from an OMVIC-registered dealer. Those protections are not there for private sales," said Cosentino.
