Former Hedley front man was found guilty in June 2022 of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an Ottawa woman

Jacob Hoggard will remain behind bars while he tries to appeal his sexual assault conviction at Canada’s top court, a justice with Ontario ’s Appeal Court ruled Friday, calling the musician’s attempt unlikely to succeed.

“If the Supreme Court of Canada grants leave to appeal, the balance may change and a reassessment of the applicant’s bail status may be warranted.”Hoggard was found guilty in June 2022 of sexual assault causing bodily harm against an Ottawa woman. He was also found not guilty of the same charge and of sexual interference, a charge that refers to the sexual touching of someone under 16, in relation to a teenage fan.

Last week, Hoggard filed an application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court and sought bail at Ontario’s Appeal Court. Copeland found that Hoggard’s leave to appeal application, while not frivolous, was “weak” and unlikely to be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada.
