Ontario seems to be taking a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach to its spending plans.
The Financial Accountability Office says, through 2025-26, the government plans to spend about $5.6-billion beyond their projections.Since it’s not earmarked for anything, the FAO says Ontario could put that cash toward new programs, use it to enhance older programs or pay down the province’s debt.If that’s put toward the debt, officials say Ontario’s debt burden would decline for an “unprecedented” seven straight years. But the PCs are striking a more pragmatic tone.
The province’s New Democrats are pouncing on the report, accusing the Ford government of “sitting on billions while Ontarians struggle.”They say the PCs should leave the debt alone and put the excess money into hospitals, schools and more.
