On May 21, health officials confirmed 413 new cases and the number climbed to 441, 412 and 460 in the following days
On Monday, Ontario health offices reported 404 new cases of COVID-19 as well as 29 more deaths, bringing the province’s total to 25,904 cases and 2,102 deaths.Previously health officials reported 10 days of daily dose counts being below 400 in Ontario, until Tuesday, May 19 when they confirmed 427 new patients. On Wednesday, the case count dropped to 390 before climbing to 413 the following day.
Provincial health officials have not yet explained the reasons behind the uptick in case counts. However, Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto chief medical officer told reporters Friday that recent celebrations during Mother’s Day on May 10 could be why the city’s daily case count has climbed, from 92 on May 18 to 258 on May 22.
“Our analysis thus far suggests that people may have acquired the virus during recent events where people traditionally spend time with their families, like Mother’s Day,” she said, as quoted by the Toronto Star. On Thursday, Premier Doug Ford acknowledged that the numbers were “concerning” and stated that he would not hesitate to roll back permissions for retail stores, recreational spaces and public if health officials deem it necessary.Ontario has struggled to meet its goal of doing 16,000 tests a day, completing just 8,170 tests the previous day.
