For those struggling to find the right specialist in the right time frame, a central referral system would be useful, a panel member said Thursday.

‘That means, for the same amount of money, you can do 25 per cent more. Or, for the same amount of procedures, you can do it 25 per cent cheaper.” There’s a broad range of surgeries and procedures that could be offered in an ambulatory centre, and that list is growing. Meanwhile, the OMA outlined two other measures it wants to see implemented as soon as possible: licensing more foreign-trained physicians through increased residency spots and a government assessment program, as well as creating more hospice beds and palliative care services to reduce pressure on emergency departments.
Dr. Sandy Buchman is medical director of North York General Hospital’s Freeman Centre for the the Advancement of Palliative Care.This could also work for Canadian physicians who have trained in other countries, but have not completed their residencies, she said. Both groups should be allowed to compete for an expanded number of medical residency spots for internationally educated physicians.
