Garry Michi resigned Tuesday as the mayor of the Town of South Bruce Peninsula over disparaging comments he made about an area First Nation

South Bruce Peninsula said it sympathizes that First Nation communities across Canada struggled with access to clean drinking water, which is a basic human necessity.

The recorded audio clip that circulated on social media questioned a decision made by the federal government to spend millions of dollars funding a water treatment plant at Neyaashiinigmiing, also called Cape Croker, near Wiarton. It is home to the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation. The town issued an apology on Friday and distanced itself from the recoding. A town official confirmed the recording was of Michi. That was followed by a call from the chief and council of the Chippewas of Nawash for him to resign, while Saugeen First Nation condemned the words of “ignorance and hate” in the recording. Bruce County, where Michi sat on council, also issued an apology to First Nations and clarified that the recording did not reflect the position of county council or staff.

Nadjiwon said they are “on the final lap” towards the plant being operational, with hopes for spring completion.
