Newcomers in Ontario won\u0027t require Canadian work experience to get work licences, but advocates say more needs to be done. Find out more.
Ontario’s immigration minister Monte McNaughton hopes more newcomers get licences to fill the province’s 7,000 vacant engineering jobs.
The report said that for the 113,000 vacant positions in the fourth quarter last year that required a university degree, there were 227,000 unemployed Canadians and permanent residents who met the education criteria. That total included 123,000 unemployed immigrants with a bachelor’s degree or higher.
“Removing the barrier of experience is a big step,” Tonie Chaltas, chief executive of Achev, a non-profit that works with newcomers, said. “But this is not a solution that’s going to be driven by just a couple of years of action. We have got a long way to go.” He said the gap in earnings between a newcomer and a local in Australia is much smaller than in Canada. An increasing number of Canadian newcomers are feeling betrayed because they can’t “ply the trade in which they are trained,” Neiman said.
He added that engineers without Canadian work experience may be overlooked by medium-sized companies due to a lack of confidence in them even if they are qualified, which in the long run could reduce opportunities for newcomers.
