The Ontario Liberal Party has yet to announce a candidate for the upcoming by-election in Sault Ste. Marie, while other parties have already named their nominees. The Liberals have been criticized for their late selection process in the past.

As of Tuesday, the Ontario Liberals have yet to announce a candidate to contest the upcoming election in Sault Ste. Marie . On January 26th, Taylor Deasley, a spokesperson for Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie, informed SooToday that the party is actively engaged in the process of nominating a candidate for the riding. SooToday followed up with an email on January 29th to inquire if the local riding association would convene a meeting to determine the party's candidate.

However, Deasley did not respond to this email or subsequent follow-up requests seeking information about the meeting, the status of a potential candidate, or confirmation of any nominations. Meanwhile, other political parties have already solidified their candidate selections for the Sault Ste. Marie riding. Doug Ford, the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, chose Chris Scott, who had been the first to publicly announce his candidacy, without conducting a local vote. Scott's nomination as the PC candidate was officially announced on January 28th. On the other hand, members of the New Democratic Party's local riding association held a vote on January 30th to select Lisa Vezeau-Allen as their candidate. This is not the first instance where the Liberal Party has delayed the announcement of a candidate. In 2022, Aidan Kallioinen, an 18-year-old high school student from Espanola, was chosen as the Liberal candidate in the final week before nomination papers were due. However, the party subsequently withdrew their support for Kallioinen and selected Liam Hancock as their candidate just a day before the nomination deadline. According to Elections Ontario, candidates have until 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) on February 13th to file their nomination papers. Voters will have their say at the polls on February 27th. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
