Over the past three years, at least 38 hospitals in Ontario have closed their emergency rooms, affecting rural communities the most. The Chesley Hospital's ER, among the worst affected, operates only during specific hours, causing significant community anxiety.

Over the past three years, at least 38 hospitals with emergency rooms or urgent care centers in Ontario have faced closures, approximately one in five of the province's 176 publicly funded facilities. Most closures are in rural areas. On October 24, Bruce Pieroway, a resident of Chesley, Ontario , was treated for a heart attack at Chesley Hospital when it was open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This hospital's emergency room has been chronically closed since 2022, operating only from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
