An Ontario couple's first rent payment for their Dominican Republic condo was accidentally sent to another 'Mike Underwood' due to a typo in the email address. Despite both parties acknowledging the error, the funds remained trapped in a fraud investigation for over two months, highlighting the lack of safety nets in the e-transfer system.
An Ontario family was expecting over $4,000 in their bank account but found out the money was accidentally sent to someone else with the same name due to a simple typo. Mike Underwood and his partner Jessica Robertson were expecting their first rent payment for their condo in the Dominican Republic. However, when the payment arrived, it went to another 'Mike Underwood' who had a TD Bank account instead of the intended Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) account.
\The mistake happened when Robertson accidentally left out two numbers in Underwood's email address when sending the Interac e-transfer. Despite both Mike Underwoods acknowledging the error, the funds have been stuck in a fraud investigation limbo for over two months. \Underwood expressed his frustration with the system, stating, 'I don't understand what type of system doesn't have a safety net for a human error as simple as a typo.' Interac, the company behind the e-transfer system, explained that once a deposit is made, the transaction cannot be reversed. They advised double-checking the recipient's information and confirming the accuracy of the amount sent. \Luckily, the couple received the $4,182 in their bank account after CTV News Toronto intervened on their behalf. They expressed gratitude for the resolution and appreciated CTV News' assistance. Interac provided recommendations for users to avoid similar situations, emphasizing the importance of confirming recipient details, utilizing autodeposit verification, and keeping e-transfer profiles up-to-date. They also suggest contacting your financial institution for support in case of mistaken transfers or suspected scams
