ICYMI: Private Ontario citizen alters speed limit, police clap back — via drivingdotca autonews

There’s no doubt that some speed limits are too high in certain areas of the country, a problem which can crop up after suburban sprawl creeps into the countryside and the highway-level speed limits are not updated. Still, a better use of one’s time and energy is spent lobbying one’s local council to officially reduce the limit, or alerting authorities to the propensity of fast-moving traffic in the area so they can increase patrols.

Following more than two years of hot debate, council in Edmonton voted to approve lowering that city’s default speed limit to 40 km/h. The change takes place later this week, on August 6, affecting residential and other zones that once had a 50 km/h limit. Drivers in the area should know if they are driving in one of these areas, the speed limit is 40 km/h whether or not there is a sign present.
