Some Gills Onions products have been recalled nationwide by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention after 73 cases of salmonella were reported across 22 states, including three cases in Ohio.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued a nationwide recall of some Gills Onions products due to a salmonella outbreak across 22 states.
The recall affects fresh diced onions processed by Gills Onions that were sent to restaurants and sold to stores across the U.S. and in Canada, according to a. The products recalled include diced yellow onions in both 3-pound bags and 8-ounce cups; diced red onions in 8-ounce cups; diced celery and onions in 8-ounce cups; and diced mirepoix in 10-ounce cups. All products have a use-by date between Aug. 8-28, 2023, but the FDA and CDC note some consumers may have frozen the products to use later.
The FDA and CDC recommends consumers who may have purchased Gills Onions products to checks their freezers and refrigerators for recalled products. If you purchased these products, the agencies recommend disposing of them or returning them where you bought them, and to wash and clean items and surfaces that may have touched the recalled onions.
Common symptoms of salmonella include a fever above 102°F, diarrhea, stomach cramps, consistent vomiting and/or being unable to keep liquids down, and signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and throat and dizziness when standing, according to the release. Symptoms usually begin between six hours and six days after consuming the bacteria, and most people recover without treatment after four to seven days, according to the release.
